MADISON JUNIOR NAMED MISSISSIPPI

AMERICAN LEGION EAGLE SCOUT 2009

Anthony ("Tony") M. Martinez of Madison won the Gold Citizenship Medal for The American Legion "Eagle Scout of the Year" for Mississippi and was nominated to The American Legion National Headquarters for consideration for further national awards.  Dr. Charles W.L. Hall, Boy Scout Chairman for The American Legion Department of Mississippi, presented the medal and Good Citizenship Citation at Awards Day at St. Joseph Catholic School May 6. Tony also received the Silver Citizenship Medal and Citation for winning his District from RV Martin, Commander of the Hovious-Grayson American Legion Post 112 of Jackson which sponsored Tony.  In addition to his outstanding community service and many accomplishments entailed in the rigorous competition for the "Eagle Scout of the Year" award, Tony has also distinguished himself this year as a State Finalist in The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program, "A Constitutional Speech Contest," and was Mississippi's Oratorical Champion in 2008.

Other recipients of District level "Eagle Scout of the Year" awards include Dane A. Christensen of Amory, Luke Rivers of Columbus, and Richard P. D'Angelo of Gulfport, and an honorable mention goes to Thomas M. Beam, II, of New Albany.

The American Legion "Eagle Scout of the Year" Award program serves to recognize the highest level of leadership and achievement on the part of Boy Scouts who on a constant basis give so much of themselves on behalf of community service and helping others.  Many programs within Mississippi communities are designed to recognize and benefit our children, however, no program known recognizes the service and work performed by Eagle Scouts and the contributions made by Boy Scouts on a day-to-day basis.
