Announcing Akela 2020

Virtual Cub Scout Olympics

The Cub Scout Outdoor Program Committee is proud to announce the 2020 Virtual Akela Campout on Saturday, October 10. This will be a Facebook Live event with several scheduled events including virtual flag ceremonies, campfire program, cooking demonstrations, nature talks, and much more. Join us from your own back yard as we come together and kick off our cub scouting year.

One month ago, it was decided for Akela to be virtual due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. To make this the best experience possible, we are recommending individual units to decide on how to participate in this virtual event. Working with your Charter Organization, Units can decide to camp as a unit on the weekend of October 10th, 2020. Units can also decide to camp as smaller dens, or as individual families.

If you decide to camp, please keep the guide to safe scouting and national COVID-19 guidelines concerning camping. These Guidelines include:

  • Anyone who has been in contact with someone with COVID-19 should consider camping individually at home.
  • Unit Leaders should monitor participants for symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Mask should be worn at all times, except when social distancing policies can be used.
  • Only allow individual families to camp in one tent. There should be no sharing of tents between different households.
  • Frequently wash hands especially before and after eating, coughing, sneezing, using the restroom, or other community facilities.
  • Follow the CDC guidelines for Social Distancing. Keep 6 feet apart from other households.
  • Consider pre-packaged meals instead of buffet style or using a line. Use disposable utensils and plates instead of washing reusable ones.
  • Have hand sanitizer available.
  • Sanitize equipment before and after each use, especially between scouts. Allow ample time for drying.
  • Review BSA SAFE re-start recommendations: https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-693.pdf
  • Review scouts Annual Health and Safety Forms.
  • Remind everyone a scout is… CLEAN.

A reminder to unit leaders… camping is solely up to individual units and should be treated as a Pack Overnight campout and must follow all Guide to Safe Scouting Guidelines. Although camping is recommended, it is completely optional.

On-Line Events

We are in the process of preparing several pre-recorded activities that will be aired throughout the day on Saturday, October 10th. We will have a virtual unit leader meeting before the event. On-Line videos will include:

  • Welcome to Camp
  • Opening Ceremony
  • Chapin’s Minute
  • Games Demonstration
  • Crafts Demonstration
  • Cooking Demonstrations
  • Nature Talks
  • Interviews
  • and a Closing Campfire.

Campfire Skits and Songs

As always, we want to encourage our units to participate in our campfire program. We are asking for units to pre-record skits and songs and submit them to our staff. A link to a dropbox folder and google drive will be provided to send them. We will like to ask if a unit is interested to please let us know. Videos will need to be sent in no later than the day before to give us enough time to format them for our campfire.

The list of supplies needed for the games and crafts is listed below, any unit may request supplies to be shipped to the unit leader to be distributed to each scout. This request must be made no later than Wednesday, September 30 to allow for time to assemble and ship. Unit leaders must inform us of the number of scouts participating and the address to send it to.

Games: Cones or stakes to mark distance, Rope or masking tape, Cardboard boxes, Uncooked Dry kidney beans, empty jar (min 12 oz), Paper Plates, and a Pool Noodle.

Crafts: Construction paper, tissue paper (Red, Yellow, Orange), Glue, and/or clear tape.

Instructions will be sent to unit leaders for the crafts, games, material for the nature talks, and other material.

Photo Contest

We always encourage parents and Scouters to take and share photos of scouts participating in activities. This event is no different. To make it more exciting we will be handing out prizes for photo contest at random times throughout the day. Parents and Scouts will receive a special tag to include in the description of the photo.

Virtual Feedback

Immediately following the campfire program, the Camp Director and other staff members will host a feedback social via Zoom. This will provide an opportunity for unit leaders to let us know how the event went and what changes they would recommend. This event will not be recorded or broadcasted. A digital survey will also be sent to each unit leader for additional feedback.

Virtual Hike

We are encouraging units and families to complete hikes for their scouts' ranks while participating in this event. We will be having a session on the Cub Scout Hiking Essentials. Hike at a state park, local public park, walking trail, or around the neighborhood. Be sure to send in photos and videos of your hike.
